As someone who has spent a large part of my life in the art world, I can appreciate a beautifully illustrated children’s book. I’ve always loved children’s books, long before having two boys of my own. As a matter of fact, I used to dream of illustrating children’s books. So you see, my enthusiasm runs deep. Everyday for over a decade I’ve been collecting and reading children’s books. I’ve compiled 5 of mine and my family’s favorite children’s books to share with you. They are beautiful and fun and you will definitely want to grab them as soon as possible!
Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You | Written and Illustrated by Nancy Tillman
Nancy Tillman is probably my favorite children’s author and illustrator. I love so many of her books. The illustrations look like beautiful paintings that children and adults can swoon over. One of my favorite lines from the book, “So hold your head high and don’t be afraid to march to the front of your own parade.” It’s truly a remarkable book to show your kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, just how loved and adored they are. I would also recommend On The Night You Were Born and It’s Time to Sleep My Love by Nancy Tillman. She’s an incredible author, you won’t regret adding her to your bookshelf.
Day Dreamers | Written and Illustrated by Emily Winfield Martin
If you’re looking for a truly magical read, this is the book for you. This book encourages your child to use their imagination and find a journey in the smallest details of their day. Day Dreamers is so colorful and soothing to look at. It’s definitely one of my favorite books to read to my boys. If you love this book, I’d also check out The Wonderful Things You Will Be and Dream Animals. Emily Winfield Martin is a talented author and artist that you must check out!
The Monster at the End of This Book | Written by Jon Stone | Illustrated by Michael Smollin
How can I not share a classic Little Golden Book? The Monster at the End of This Book was always my husband’s favorite, according to my mother-in-law. It grew to be one of my oldest son’s favorites as well. You cannot go wrong with Sesame Street, especially sweet, lovable, furry old Grover! Grover carries you through this book trying endlessly to get you not to turn the page, because there is a monster at the end of the book! We eventually see it’s just our sweet friend Grover, he’s the monster. It’s so nostalgic for the grown ups and silly for the kids. I’d definitely grab this one and the sequel Another Monster at the End of This Book if you have any Sesame Street or monster fans in your house!
There’s a Monster in Your Book | Written by Tom Fletcher | Illustrated by Greg Abbott
Monsters are a big hit in this house, so I had to share one of my youngest son’s favorite monster books. He has a whole stack of monster themed books we have to read every night, and this one always has us giggling. I love how engaging and interactive this book is. As you flip the pages, you’re trying to get this monster out of your book. You are flipping, shaking, turning, and yelling at this cute little monster. It’s adorable to see your little one giggle and laugh trying to get the monster out of the book, only to realize maybe it wasn’t the best idea! Grab it, you won’t regret this one!
Where Happiness Lives | Written by Barry Timms | Illustrated by Greg Abbott
I saved the best for last! This gem is my newest favorite children’s book. The story has such beautiful meaning, that it makes children and adults recognize that sometimes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence. Gray Mouse has a nice home, and is happy. Until one day he is out on a walk and realizes his neighbor’s house is bigger so he assumes he must be happier. Then the two neighbors find the biggest house of all, and they see that maybe having a big house doesn’t always make us happier. It’s a charming book that helps us remember to be happy with what we have. I loved this book so much, I think it needs to be in every kid’s hands!
What’s your family’s favorite children’s book? Grab these books, and let us know what you think!
